Every heard of Street Harassment? That’s when (mostly) guys yell sexually suggestive remarks or make “cat calls” (e.g., woo hoo baby) at women who are just walking down the street, sometimes to even elementary aged girls! This is a beautiful, sad essay by an African American woman on her experience growing up with street harassment
Bullying and Harassment-General
You think YOU have it rough in being bullied? Monika Lewinsky. Gaslighting
one thing psychologically manipulative partners do is called gaslighting.
Here are some suggestions for dealing with it.
Depersonalization and Derealization
Depersonalization/Deprealization (DPDR) is a strange processing problem that results in a sense of things not being real, a feeling that you are an observer to your own actions and thoughts despite your functioning being unremarkable. You look normal to other people. There is no clear and reliable treatment. For some people, the experience is temporary. For others, it comes and goes across years. The research on it is unsatisfying at the time of this writing (7/20). This means DPDR is ripe for people, sometimes even professional people, to just come up with a “cure” or treatment based on some intuition or even psuedo science. Please carefully evaluation potential treatments with a critical eye. Be especially skeptical of “alternative” therapies or those that have no scientific evidence of effectiveness. Here are some resources that seemed to make sense to me based on the potential role of the vagus nerve/parasympathetic nervous system in managing stress related to the natural emotional dissociation process that seems to be related to DPDR.
Overviews of the vagus nerve physiology and functioning
I found this article in Medium a good review or DPDR and ways to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
19 ways to stimulate the vagus nerve
Grounding yourself (bringing your perceptual sense back to an awareness of your immediate surroundings rather than being stuck in your head) is a technique that seems to be of some help. 54321 is a basic technique that forces your awareness back to your immediate surroundings
OK, this one is a little out there. Tapping on pressure points (originating from ancient Chinese medicine and energy practices) may also help you stay “grounded.” This article is about the potential value for ADHD, it gives a good description of the technique. There are also pressure points on your ear that appear to activate the vagus nerve with some stimulation methods that might be worth exploring
